Liver detoxification: Everything you need to know

The liver is one of the most important organs that has many functions which includes the building of proteins, manufacturing of triglycerides & cholesterol, glycogen synthesis, production of bile and blood clotting factors. It is one of the largest internal organs of the body. There are many diseases which can occur in liver such as hepatitis cirrhosis, cancer, damage by toxins etc. Hence it is very important to keep the liver free from infections and toxins.


The main function of the liver is to fight the infection and clean the blood. It also helps in digestion of the food and storing of the same. The liver is also responsible for destroying the old red blood cells and regulating the blood composition to balance protein fat and sugar. One of the most remarkable ability of liver is to regenerate when it is damaged.

One of the most common problems which are faced nowadays is a fatty liver disease. Fatty liver disease means that you have extra fat in your Liver. There are basically two reasons due to which you may have a fatty liver i.e. alcohol-related fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Normally we believe that drinking too much alcohol causes a buildup of fat in the liver which can cause cirrhosis, however, the fatty tissue can also build up in your liver if you drink little or no alcohol. One of the important reason for NAFLD is the lifestyle. It is very important to include certain foods in your daily diet which helps in detoxification of the liver. Some of them are as follows:

It has been proven through studies that coffee drinkers have fewer chances of liver damage than those who do not drink this caffeinated beverage. Caffeine lowers the number of abnormal liver enzymes which ultimately results in the lesser possibility of liver disease. It also helps in reducing constipation and fatigue.


2. Garlic:

Garlic activates enzymes in the liver which cleans out the toxins. There are two natural compounds in garlic i.e.  Allicin and Selenium, which protects the liver from toxins. Eating 2-3 cloves of fresh raw garlic in the morning (empty stomach) promotes liver health. You can also include garlic in your day to day cooking whenever possible.

Grapefruit is a great source of vitamin C and is rich in antioxidants which helps in cleaning the liver. It contains glutathione which neutralizes the free radicals and detoxifies the liver, hence, grapefruit juice in the morning will surely benefit the liver.

Green vegetables have an ability to neutralize the heavy metals chemicals, insecticides, and pesticides. Green leafy vegetables such as bitter gourd, spinach, mustard greens, chicory etc. should be included in the daily diet. These green vegetables can be eaten raw or cooked.


5.Beetroot and carrot:

These two vegetables are responsible for increasing the blood flow, reducing blood pressure and detoxification of the body. These vegetables are rich in essential nutrients and antioxidants. Both super-foods help in curing inflammation, constipation, and cleaning of the toxins from the body. Beetroots are considered to be a nitrate food which further converts into nitric oxide and is responsible for releasing a compound that relaxes the arteries and improves the blood circulation and oxygenation within the brain. Both veggies contain beta-carotene which is used to produce vitamin A.

Lemons also help into toxification of the liver because of the presence of an antioxidant D-Limonene. It also contains a high amount of Vitamin C which helps in the production of enzymes in the liver to promote better digestion of food. Drinking lemon water along with the little amount of honey is highly beneficial for the liver and the body. It also reduces obesity.


7.  Avocados and apples:

Both fruits contain essential nutrients that help in cleaning the toxins from the body. Eating avocados (1-2 per week) and apples are highly recommended because they also contain several other vitamins which are essential for the overall growth of our body. It is important to understand that fruits should not be eaten together with the meals. At-least a gap of 30 minutes to 1 hour should be kept between the fruits and the meals.

Drinking green tea daily helps in flushing out the toxins, fat deposits and it also increases the hydration level. It is recommended to drink 2 to 3 cups of green tea on daily basis. It can be sweetened with honey if required. It also eliminates the possibility of free radicals which is one of the prime reason for cancer.

Turmeric is a yellow color spice which has been used in India for thousands of years. It reduces the joint pain, aids in digestion, helps to restore the blood sugar levels and boost liver detoxification by activating the enzymes that flush out the toxins. Curcumin is one of the main ingredients of turmeric which is also a very strong antioxidant. The curcumin content in turmeric is around 3%. Hence it is important to buy only good quality turmeric.
