Leukemia

Leukemia is cancer of the blood cells. If a person is experiencing symptoms of Leukemia they may notice swollen lymph nodes, fever or night sweats, frequent infections, feeling tired or weak, bleeding and bruising easily, discomfort or swelling in the abdomen, pain in the joints or bones, and weight loss for no known reason.

There are no exact causes of Leukemia but there are some things that can put anyone at risk for developing this type of cancer. People who already have Leukemia are at risk for developing infections, and anemia. To diagnose Leukemia doctors examine a person’s blood and bone marrow samples under a microscope. Doctors also look at a person’s past medical history. Those are really the only ways that they can diagnose it. The 4 main types of Leukemia are acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, acute myelocytic leukemia, and chronic myelocytic leukemia.

Every person that has Leukemia may not go through the same type of treatment. It all depends on the type of Leukemia that a person has. They also look at certain features of Leukemia cells, the extent of the disease, and prior history and treatment. Doctors will also consider age and health of the individual before a treatment is produced. Most of the times, people with Leukemia end up getting treated with chemothearpy. Some people may also receive radiation thearpy or even bone marrow transplantation. There is no known way to even treat Leukemia. This cancer sometimes ends up deadly for most patients who suffer from it depending on which stage they are in and how effective they react to such treatments. People also need to think about what happens to these patients after treatments are done. They start experiencing all other types of problems dealing with infections, etc. that can just be too much.
