Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is a condition that causes some loss of vision in the center of the eye known as the macula. Those who suffer from this eye condition only have peripheral vision which allows them to perform daily tasks, but with blurred vision.
There are two different types of macular degeneration and those types are wet and dry. Wet degeneration happens when the blood vessels in the eyes start to grow abnormally causing protein and blood to seep underneath the macula. When this occurs, the photoreceptors in the eyes are damaged causing permanent vision loss. Dry degeneration happens when the pigments inside the retina begin to layer. With this condition, the vision in the center part of the eye is lost.
Some of the symptoms that start to develop with macular degeneration are blurred vision, some lost vision, having a hard time identifying colors, sensitive to bright lights, sensitive to contrast and pigment alterations in the eyes.
Now there are no cures for either types of macular degeneration, but there are treatments that can slow these conditions down. Taking vitamins, herbal supplements and minerals can help slow down macular degeneration by strengthening the eyes naturally and safely. Doctors can also prescribe medications and do special treatments that can help treat and slow down the progression of macular degenerations. Another way to help improve eyes sight and possibly slow down macular degeneration is with a proper diet that consist of lots of fruits, vegetables and fish that contain high amounts of antioxidants and essential fatty acids which are needed to keep eyes healthy and strong.
People with macular degeneration do live normal happy healthy lives and do have some of their vision. However, if macular degeneration is left untreated permanent eye loss can happen. This is why taking care of your eyesight by eating properly, taking supplements and medications and doing treatments are important.
