Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

An infection of the reproductive organs in women is referred to as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Women contract this disease when bacteria from sexually transmitted diseases end up spreading from your vagina to uterus. It can also spread to your upper genital tract.

Women who have this disease usually experience many symptoms such as, pain in your lower abdomen, heavy vaginal discharge, irregular menstrual bleeding, pain during intercourse, low back pain, fever, fatigue, diarrhea or vomiting, and painful or difficult urination. Some women may or may not experience any of these symptoms at all. Any unsafe sexual practices will increase your chance of developing this disease. Many women did not know that an IUD can increase their risk of getting Pelvic Inflammatory disease as well.

Doctors can determine if you have PID by running some tests on you. These test include a pelvic ultrasound, an endometrial biopsy, and laparoscopy. Doctors use antibiotics as the main treatment to get rid of PID. If you do not want to get re-infected, it is highly advised for your partner to get examined as well. The only time hospitalization is required for PID, is when a woman is pregnant, if you are seriously ill, if you are HIV positive, or if oral medications did not help at all.

If you want to reduce your risk of developing PID, there are some things that you can keep in mind. Practicing safe sex, getting tested, getting your partner tested, eliminate douching, and paying attention to hygiene habits, are all ways to lower the risk of developing PID. It will only turn serious if you allow it to. Taking care of yourself and your body is the most important if you want to stay healthy. If you already had PID, you should really stay aware at all times.
